"Tactical Transparency" by Shel Holtz, John C. Havens and Lynne D. Johnson (Adobe PDF eBook)

4
Average: 4 (1 vote)

Holz discusses the benefits of transparency for your company, your internal staff and your customers. "Be honest, authentic, and willing to engage in conversations — even conversations about things that are not exactly flattering — and your company will be respected. Goodwill accrues that can see you through difficult times." Transparency does not mean revealing everything about your company, such as salaries, proprietary information and the like, but as a way to connect with your customers, vendors and members of the public who are interested in your company.

Average: 4.5 (4 votes)

This book covers a three-step writing process to get the best results from your business letters: prewriting, writing and revision. The author asks you to think about why you are writing your letter and what you are trying to say. What do you want to accomplish and what action do you want the reader to take. It also gives you lists of phrases and power words that you can use and tells you how to write to hostile readers. (KJ)

"Meditation for Beginners" by Jack Kornfield (OverDrive Video)

4.5
Average: 4.5 (2 votes)

As someone who's had a long-held interest in meditation, I've always intended to take a course in it, but never quite managed to find the time. When I spotted Jack Kornfield's downloadable video in the library catalogue, I jumped at the opportunity and decided to check it out. Not only is the video aimed at beginners, but it also offers the added convenience of being able to take the class any time I want.

The instructor, Jack Kornfield, holds a PhD in clinical psychology, and has vast experience with meditation from having lived in Asia for five years as a Buddhist monk, trained in the meditative practice. Through his teachings, he has been instrumental in introducing meditation to the Western world.

Mr. Kornfield slowly takes the student through the steps, beginning with finding a comfortable posture, paying attention to breathing, and focusing on mindfulness. His calm voice is very quieting, and allows the student to relax and ease into the process.

He teaches the student how to keep the mind from wandering, repeatedly bringing it back to the present, and how to allow distractions like external noises or physical sensations to be acknowledged and pass through the mind without disrupting the meditative process.

I definitely recommend this course to anyone interested in beginning meditation, and found Jack Kornfield to be a highly skilled and capable instructor. (CD)

"Find It, Fix It, Flip It!" by Michael Corbett (Adobe PDF eBook)

2.6
Average: 2.6 (5 votes)

Not only is "Find It, Fix It, Flip It!" informative, but it is very easy to understand and read. Corbett explains everything from start to finish so the beginner can understand. Although he states that flipping isn't easy, he gives you a great foundation to begin. It's a wonderful book not only for those who flip, but even for regular homebuyers in general. I also liked that his strategies will work anywhere. This is not a book about how to flip properties in hot markets where there is huge demand. The bottom line is about creating a wonderful home that will sell fast and for a lot more than you paid, and he sticks to that theme pretty well without getting lost in construction details. My only criticism is that the book is loaded with lots of before and after photos, but would be even better if they were taken from the same angle. (DM)

Getting It Done: How to Lead When You're Not in Charge (OverDrive MP3 Audiobook)

3.125
Average: 3.1 (8 votes)

All of us have to work collaboratively at some point - with coworkers, spouses, vendors, or family. Getting It Done is a great resource to help people learn effective tools on how to achieve success when you need to rely on others who aren't necessarily under your control. The authors say this kind of collaborative leadership consists of five main elements: clarifying the purpose of what you're trying to accomplish, understanding how to harness the power of organized thought, learning how to integrate thinking with doing, getting yourself and your team engaged, and learning how to give feedback on what's been accomplished. It's not a long eBook - just over 2 hours - but gives great practical advice on how to lead laterally.

"Say It Like Obama: The Power of Speaking with Purpose and Vision" by Shel Leanne (Adobe eBook)

3.4
Average: 3.4 (5 votes)

Say It Like Obama: The Power of Speaking with Purpose and Vision is a dense and very well documented piece about President Obama’s speeches that he has made during his political career. It not only delves into how he structured the speeches, but also the physicality of how he presented them. By looking individually at each gesture, smile and pause, the reader is able to fully appreciate the speech and the technical masterpiece that each one was. I fully enjoyed this book, and though I found it to be very intense, it fully delivers what it promises at the beginning, to both educate the reader on what makes a great speech (which is not only comprised of the words), and remind him or her about how inspiring Obama’s words really are. "The Complete Book of Home Inspection" by Norman Becker, P.E. (Adobe PDF eBook)

3.25
Average: 3.3 (4 votes)

We all would like to avoid those unexpected surprises during the home buying process, such as discovering a hole in your wall after you've closed on your house -- it was hiding behind a painting. The home inspection is an integral part of the home buying process. This book is a how-to guide to the home inspection. It is aimed at the layman to help us understand both the inspection process and how our homes work. It covers both external and internal inspection points: from roofs to basements; from heating systems to swimming pools. Each chapter is easy to read and is dedicated to a particular part of the home. In addition, each chapter ends with a very helpful checklist of inspection points. There are additional inspection worksheets at the end of the book. This would be a valuable read not only for anyone buying a home, but also for sellers who are interested in knowing what fixes might be in their future. (KS)
